Donnie Darko director has “no respect” for sequel

Buy the man a box of chocolate roses. “Donnie Darko” director Richard Kelly says those behind the cult film’s notoriously shite 2009 sequel “S Darko” can….well, get politely laid.

Speaking in conjunction with the re-release of the original headscratcher, Kelly tells Digital Spy the fact a sequel exists is a “horribly violating thing”.

Just one thing.. he hasn’t watched it.

“I’ve never seen it, I will never watch it, I had no legal recourse to prevent them from making it. I have no respect for the people who made that film, and they can all go f**k themselves.”

Again, he hasn’t watched it.

Now if this were Ridley Scott carrying on about James Cameron doing a sequel to his 1979 masterpiece “Alien”, and not taking the time to even watch it before judging, we’d probably toss poprocks at him but Kelly clearly knows just how rubbish “S Darko” is.

If he saw the trailer, even read the synopsis, he’d be right in saying the sequel didn’t need to be.. and shouldn’t have ever been. It was a middle finger to Jake Gyllenhaal fans everywhere. As far as Kelly is concerned, there was never intended to be a sequel. Too damn right!

“I feel like people should respect what the film is and let it be what it is,” he said. “I’m never a fan of any unnecessary sequels or remakes or reboots. I think they’re made for cynical purposes, and I like to move forward.”

The win for us? No sequel to “Southland Tales”.
