Dredd rebooted as TV series

Though most would prefer to hear news of a “Dredd” movie sequel, with Karl Urban back under the hood, EW reports that a live-action “Judge Dredd” TV series is in the works.

IM Global and independent U.K. games developer and publisher Rebellion have struck a deal to turn the 2000 AD comic book character into a live-action TV show called “Judge Dredd : Mega City One”.

The pilot, says EW, “is set in a future where the East Coast of the U.S. has become a crowded and crime-ridden megalopolis. The plan is to make the series an ensemble drama about a team of Judges — futuristic cops invested with the power to be judge, jury, and executioner — as they deal with the challenges the future-shocked 22nd century throws at them.”

Being that the show will fix on a group of futuristic cops/Judges, the show will be quite a different crate of eggs from the films – the first featuring Sylvester Stallone in the title role, with Karl Urban playing Dredd in the recent incarnation.

One might argue that the show is only happening because of the surge of support that Urban and his “Dredd” received, particularly in relation to a sequel or TV series spin-off, so it’s a little strange that IM isn’t doing a direct spin-off of it rather than something totally new.
