Godzilla reboot has a director!

I like Gareth Edwards. He’s not only a talented filmmaker – see his debut “Monsters” for verification – but a smart chap that seems intent on doing his own thing, regardless of whether it upsets the apple cart of a few. “Monsters”, as Edwards told us a couple of weeks ago on the Hole Cast, disappointed a few people because they thought it’d would be more about, well, monsters as opposed to a character piece with monsters playing somewhat of a featured extra role. But good on him; the film was appreciably different, original and – compared to what it’d have cost him had the ‘Monsters’ been a central figure in the film – relatively cheap to make (The guy did all the effects on his computer!).
While he mulls over a possible “Monsters” sequel (Edwards told us he might be keen to do a film set in the same world but not necessarily with the same characters), the Brit filmmaker has been recruited to shoot a new “Godzilla” project for Legendary Pictures. This is quite a score – for starters, Legendary produced the hits “The Dark Knight”, “Superman Returns”, “300” and “The Hangover”, but more so, the last person to direct a “Godzilla” movie was Roland Emmerich, who at the time had just come off the super-successful multimillion dollar hit “Independence Day”. I think it’s safe to say Edwards has graduated to the Majors.
Edwards could essentially do with “Godzilla” what he did with “Monsters” – a monster movie with the human characters, not the monster, playing the central roles. I’m sure that’s what appealed to Legendary about an Edwards-led reboot of the Japanese classic.

First look at Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker!
