Grahame-Smith onboard Gremlins reboot

Warner Bros have seemingly given Seth Grahame-Smith, Tim Burton’s buddy, currently working on a “Beetlejuice” sequel, the keys to the WB back catalog it seems.

Unfortunately, and if only because the original 1984 film is still a perfectly great piece of entertainment, the writer-producer has come across the “Gremlins” title on his travels. Furthemrore, Warner Bros has given him the go-ahead to redo it.

Bloody Disgusting says Grahame-Smith is so far only onboard to produce the Joe Dante-less “Gremlins” reboot, but considering he usually writes most of the film’s he’s involved in, expect him to have a stab at writing it too.

One can only hope, and there’s a chance this might happen considering his “Beetlejuice” sequel was originally referred to as a ‘reboot’ too (and still might be – despite the fact some of the original players might be involved), that Graeme-Smith’s smart enough to know we fans would prefer he combine the old with the new, and not only bring back some of those fun, animatronic Gremlins (rather than using CGI – well, to a point) but have the new film take place after the events of the 1984 film – and possibly with appearances from some of the original Gremlin-mashers, like Billy (Zach Gallighan) and Kate (Phoebe Cates). Surely, Billy and Kate ended up having ‘kids’, right? And surely Gizmo’s still hiding in a shoe-box of Billy’s, right?
See… two ideas right there for you Mr Graeme-Smith.

Seth Grahame-Smith, the author of ”Pride & Prejudice & Zombies” and ”Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”, will produce the film alongside regular collaborator David Katzenberg.

The original “Gremlins” was written by Christopher Columbus and directed by Joe Dante; a 1990 sequel followed.
