Heroes : Season 3 [DVD]

By Clint Morris

For those who’ve been fortunate enough to miss it, the brainchild of ”Crossing Jordan” and ”Providence” writer/producer Tim Kring, Heroes tells the improbable yarn of a group of strangers, all blessed/cursed with a singular respective power, who band together to fight the forces of evil – in this case, a shady government who plans to exploit their powers for bad, and an evil super-villain named Sylar (Zachary Quinto, Spock from the new ”Star Trek” – one of the show’s bright spots) whose out to collect ‘all’ their powers.

Our ‘Heroes’ include an immortal cheerleader (Hayden Panettiere), a mind-reading cop (Greg Grunberg from ”Alias”), a geneticist scientist (Sendhil Ramamurthy) who has injected himself with an experimental serum that has given him superhuman strength, and a hospice nurse (Milo Ventimiglia from ”Rocky Balboa”) with the ability to fly!

It sounds great – and honestly, season 1 showed signs of that greatness… but ever since, the bloated “X-Men” clone has been about as fun as having your ass waxed by the corpse of Dom DeLuise. Some episodes are OK, but mostly, it’s in an intolerable bore.

Since the Season 2 finale, viewers have been left wondering whether Congressman Nathan (Adrian Pasdar) is dead? Whether Niki (Ali Larter) is too? And whether Peter (Milo Ventimiglia) is going to start banging his sister, the cheerleader, any time soon? (Well, fair question right?) You’ll find out this season.

In all fairness, the episodes do start to improve towards the end of the season – indicating that season 5 might get things back on track – but its not so much a welcome reprieve from boredom as it is a case of too little, too late… since most of us will now be watching the show with the volume down as we do a cross-word puzzle from the back pages of an old TV Week.

Extras

Extras include commentaries, deleted scenes, and numerous featurettes. If only the show could be as good as the supplementary materials section, eh?
