Hunger Games casting news, set pics

I gotta admit, when I first got wind of Lionsgate making ‘The Hunger Games’ movie I could only assume that someone had finally gotten around to optioning that bit of fan-fic about Lardass Hogan from ”Stand by Me”. ‘At long last’, I said to myself, ‘the Pie-eating champion would get his own flick!’

Unfortunately, there’ll be no vomiting at the Village Candy Counter in 2012 – unless, of course, Warners work quick on getting that “Yogi Bear” sequel out.

I’ve now been versed; “The Hunger Games” will not feature chubby piglets but young, spunky combatants.

Based on the book by Suzanne Collins (not Jackie Collins, unfortunately; otherwise Fabio might’ve gotten some work), “The Hunger Games” is the foodless tale of a dystopic Capitol that requires its twelve subjugated districts to pay tribute in the form of a teenage boy and girl who are forced to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV. When Katniss Everdeen’s little sister is chosen in the lottery, Katniss volunteers to take her place. Although persevering through hardship is commonplace for Katniss, she must start making choices that weigh survival against humanity and life against love in order to win the games and return home.

Oscar Nominee Jennifer Lawrence (“X-Men : First Class”) is Katniss, Philip Island export Liam Hemsworth (“The Last Song”) is Gale, and “Spider-Man” hopeful cum ‘Journey to the Center of the Earth’ franchise headliner Josh Hutcherson is Peeta. And then there’s Stanley Tucci, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks and Lenny Kravitz filling the supporting slots. And apparently Lardass Hogan doesn’t even do a walk-on.

A few new pics and some casting news for the first chapter in the film trilogy today.

Firstly, director Gary Ross (“Pleasantville”) has tapped newcomers Amber Chaney, Kimiko Gelman and Nelson Ascencio to play the roles of the tongueless Avox girl, and Venia and Flavius, two members of Katniss’ prep team, repectively.

Their photos will mean more to the fans than their names, no doubt :

Finally, ‘Juice Girl’ points us in the direction of PopSugar who have a bevy iof set pics up.
