“Babylon 5”, which went off the air in 1998, may be returning to our screens.
“Star Trek” alum Walter Koenig, who played Psi Cop Alfred Bester on “Babylon 5”, says the show’s creator J. Michael Straczynski is in negotiations with Warner Bros at the moment to reaquire the rights to the popular sci-fi offering.
TrekMovie quotes Koenig, speaking at a Las Vegas Trekkie convention :
He told me that he is in negations to re-acquire the rights to Babylon 5 and it looks pretty good. Now what that portends I am not entirely sure. It could be a new series or it could be a feature film, but he was quite animated about it. He seemed very excited and Warner Brothers is dealing with him in good faith. So you might see another Babylon 5 in the not too distant future.
Straczynski said a couple of years ago that he was interested in doing a feature film version of “Babylon 5” (he’s also done some telemovie spin-offs, the last one was released in 2007) but little has been heard of it since.
In a 2010 interview with Newsarama, the “Thor” and “World War Z” scribe said :
I’ve kind of drawn a line in the sand, saying no to any more low-budget DVD releases and the like. It’s a big-budget movie or nothing. Oddly, WB — which is being very nice to me at the moment, given how things are going film-wise — has been coming around to say “So how much money would you need to make this work?” so there may be something to this. We’ll see.
