James Gunn casts The Wolfman in Guardians of the Galaxy

The Wolfman’s gonna be mixing it up with the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Benicio del Toro has snared a multi-pic deal with Marvel to play an unidentified character in several Marvel movies, beginning with an appearance in James Gunn’s space-set superhero jaunt “Guardians of the Galaxy”.

del Toro’s part is described as being akin to Samuel L.Jackson’s Nick Fury, who has popped up in most Marvel movies. This could suggest a ‘cameo’ sized appearance in “Guardians” or something larger.

Some sites are suggesting that del Toro is playing Thanos, the intergalactic bad guy that appeared (very briefly) at the end of Joss Whedon’s “The Avengers” and who is reportedly being reassembled for a reprise in “Guardians” and the upcoming “Avengers 2”.

The cast of “Guardians”, due 2014, just keeps getting more interesting with each presser declaration. A few days back, Glenn Close was reported to be in talks to join the cast, while John C.Reilly is also believed to be negotiating for a role. On the weekend, “Doctor Who’s” Karen Gillian was said to have been cast as a female heavy in the picture. (Earlier today, Troma founder Lloyd Kaufman, who is director Gunn’s former employer, mentioned he has a role in the film too, though he’s unsure whether his scene will make it into the final film)

The flick, based on the comic series of the same name, features Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, and Dave Bautista in the head hero roles.

“Usual Suspects” alum Del Toro’s recent credits include Oliver Stone’s “Savages” and “Che Part One” and “Che Part Two” ; he recently played Pablo Escobar in the upcoming “Paradise Lost”, and is currently filming Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Inherent Vice”.
