Jeff Goldblum wants new Fly sequel

THE FLY, Jeff Goldblum, 1986, TM & Copyright (c) 20th Century Fox Film Corp.

No doubt the result of his latest blockbuster putting him back in the limelight, ’90s icon Jeff Goldblum – starring in this week’s “Independence Day : Resurgence” – thinks there’s still life in another of the movie brands he’s been long associated with – and no, it’s not a title that features the words “6500”.

According to the former tentpole king (maybe he will be again after this weekend?) he’d fancy seeing a sequel to his ’86 classic “The Fly”.

Whether he’s in it or not would likely depend on how smart the anointed screenwriter is.

Talking to the BBC, Goldblum said he’d love to see director David Cronenberg be at the helm of a new film – it, of course, would be the second sequel to Goldblum’s film (horror fans will recall the ill-fated 1989 sequel starring Eric Stoltz in the role of Goldblum’s character’s son). According to the actor, “new technology” would allow Cronenberg to “do whatever he wants to with some other Fly story”.

“It was kind of primitive back in ’86/’87”, the 63 year-old actor says of the effects work on the original, “I’d be interested in seeing it.”

The idea isn’t that far fetched, several, including Cronenberg, have tried to revive the franchise. 20th Century Fox, surprisingly enough (being that they’ve a real woody for franchises), passed on every idea for a sequel/reboot/remake that was floated. According to Cronenberg, they didn’t want to give him the money to make it – too costly, apparently.

Whether it’s for “The Fly 3” or another film, Goldblum says he’s itching to work with the visionary Cronenberg again.

“I was satisfied with the very nourishing collaboration we had, but it would be dreamy to work with him”.
