Justice League : Mortal lives… in documentary form!

Hot on the heels of “The Death of Superman Lives : What Happened?”, Dark Horizons reports that a film examining the making and ultimate collapse of George Miller’s superhero pic “Justice League : Mortal” is in the works.

Director Ryan Unicomb, producers Aaron Cater and Steven Caldwell and writer/author Maria Lewis are putting together the documentary, which “will reportedly be an unbiased account of the superhero ensemble project’s gestation, development and ultimate disintegration.”

“Miller’s Justice League Mortal” (tentative title) has interest from private investors; a crowdfunding campaign might also be implemented to generate some of the budget.

“Justice League : Mortal” was set to shoot in Australia in 2008, with a mostly no-name cast (Armie Hammer, D.J Cotrona, Megan Gale, Common, Adam Brody, Teresa Palmer) playing some of DC’s most famous superheroes, including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and The Flash. Jay Baruchel would’ve been the villain, and Hugh Keays-Byrne (who would later be hired for “Mad Max : Fury Road”) would’ve been Martian Manhunter.

Unicomb is planning to speak to many of those cast members about the movie, as well as show off costumes and whatnot from the unproduced picture.

The movie was cancelled because the Australian government ended up denying the movie a much-needed tax credit, resulting in a budget that was unattainable.

“George Miller’s ill-fated Justice League is a film that has gained an almost cult like following among movie buffs and comic book diehards as the legend around the production has grown over the years”, Lewis told Dark Horizons. “There has always been an interest in this story and now seems like the best time to try and tell it from the perspective of people who tried to bring that fantastical vision to the big screen. It’s a tale that’s driven by the fans and their love of this concept from DC Comics, so it’s a natural progression to get the fans involved in the documentary as well when we throw it out there as a Kickstarter in the next few weeks.”
