Lovers Torn-Apart : Tragically beautiful Movie Couples and Soul Mates

“How am I supposed to go on with my life…. knowing what… we had”.

Hi Everyone,

Phoebe here. Having recently lost, at my own stupid doing, the love of my life (something that only occurs to me a few months on) I’ve been engrossed with romantic flicks about star-crossed lovers torn apart by, well, stupidity or tragedy lately.

Some people are inexplicably tied together; they’re like what, many call, ‘soul mates’. These people mightn’t end up married, let alone together, but somehow they still remain connected – – out of sight, doesn’t always mean out of mind.

Here are ten gorgeous screen couples who, via external forces, were forced apart physically… but who will no doubt be forever, secretly in love.

Jade and David, Endless Love (1981)

She (Brooke Shields) was young, innocent and completely besotted with her charming David (Martin Hewitt). But with their relationship came a mound of turbulence, ultimately resulting in a tragic death and psychotic breakdown that forced the two endless lovers apart.

Quote : ” I know it’s difficult to understand, but I can’t make love to anybody but Jade. It’s just the way I feel.”

Landon and Jamie, A Walk to Remember (2003)

Their time together was short, but it was long enough for them both to experience the full meaning of true love, how to overcome obstacles, and for former bad-boy Landon (Shane West) to be forever changed, positively-speaking, by the angelic Jamie (Mandy Moore). These two never split, but Jamie did leave him – she sadly died from Cancer.  It’s a movie that reminds us that one can person can change your life forever.

Quote : ” Jamie saved my life. She taught me everything. About life, hope and the long journey ahead. I’ll always miss her. But our love is like the wind. I can’t see it, but I can feel it. ”

Buffy and Angel, “Buffy, the Vampire Slayer”

At one time TV’s most popular couple, Buffy  (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Angel (David Boreanaz)  were destined to be together and maybe one day they’ll even work out a way to make it work. But while she’s a vampire slayer, and he’s a vampire, forces just keep working against them. Doubt there’s a night that both don’t think of each other though. Buffy would later get involved with Spike (James Marsters), and though they had a passionate and somewhat screwed-up relationship that would pass muster for a while, both deep down knew that they weren’t supposed to be together.

Quote : ” If I can’t convince you that you belong in this world, then I don’t know what can. But do not expect me to watch. And don’t expect me to mourn for you, because … [Snow falls, blocking the sunlight.]”

Ethan and Julia, “Mission : Impossible III” (2006), “Mission : Impossible : Ghost Protocol” (2011)

She was the nurse that was able to calm and slow up the go-getting secret agent. When they were around each other, they lit up – their smiles beaming brighter than the moon. But because of how dangerous his occupation was, and knowing what a risk it was to his wife, Ethan was forced to walk away. He still watches her from afar, and he is never far from her thoughts either.

Quote : “It’s going really well”

Romeo & Juliet, “Romeo & Juliet” (1996)

We can all relate to this one in some way – you’re both from opposite sides of the track; you’ve both led different lives and are different places. Somehow though, as if magnetically brought together, you become one with this person – -but are torn apart by the same tragic forces that warned you off the tryst in the first place. One of the great tragedies! Sniffle.

Quote : ” Two households, both alike in dignity. In Fair Verona where we lay our scene. From ancient grudge break to new mutiny. Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean. From forth the fatal loins of these two foes, a pair of star-crossed lovers take their life.”

Jack & Rose, “Titanic” (1998)

She’s rich and engaged to be married. He’s poor but is a much nicer, moralistic and charming person than the aforesaid fiancée. They come together, rather covertly, on the deck of the Titanic. One of the greatest love stories in recent cinema history sinks quickly, much like the ship they meet on, when he makes the ultimate sacrifice for the one he loves.

They would later reunite in death.

Quote : ” I’ll never let go, Jack. I promise.”

Rachel and Frank, “The Bodyguard” (1993)

Never get involved with a client – especially if she’s a world-famous musician and you’re the guy being paid to protect her from danger. That’s the message in Mick Jackson’s thrilling but very mushy 1992 thriller. When Rachel (Whitney Houston) says, and later sings, her goodbye to her beloved Frank (Kevin Costner) your heart can’t help but break a little…

Quote : “Stay with me! Frank! Stay with me”

Matt and Casey, Mad Love (1995)

He knew his girlfriend had some problems, but this was no depression young was battling and as their cross-country love-trip progressed, he would soon learn he was in love with a very mentally ill girl.  In order to save her, and ultimately himself, he had to check out of the love motel and check her into the hospital.  One of the more realistic portrayals of being in love with someone with a mental illness and a lasting reminder that, regardless of how the brain thinks, some people will stand by you through anything, even at the cost of themselves, if their love is real.

Quote : ” I can handle it, alright? I mean I’m here, aren’t I? I’m here right now! I’m not leaving! ”

Sam and Molly, “Ghost” (1990)

Now this is a beautiful movie. Sam is totally devoted to his beloved Molly, he would do anything for her – even die. Now caught between life and death, Sam’s Ghost sticks around to protect Molly and keep an eye on her, but when all is said and done, he ultimately has to walk into the light and the two have to say goodbye. One for those who have had to leave the love of their lives, never to see each other again.

Quote :  “It’s amazing, Molly. The love inside, you take it with you”

Garrett and Theresa, Message in a Bottle, (1998)

Despite their differences and the many hurdles they’d have had to overcome if they’d stayed together, Garrett was another guy that would’ve done anything for his girl. They would split, but after realizing their life’s were nothing without each other, he set off on a sea-bound trip to reclaim the lost love… and never returned.

Quote : ” If some lives form a perfect circle, others take shape in ways we cannot predict or always understand. Loss has been a part of my journey. But it has also shown me what is precious. So has a love for which I can only be grateful. ”

Richard and Elise, Somewhere in Time (1980)

Some people are just meant to be together – regardless of their situation, age, race, religion or the time periods they exist in. When time-travelling Christopher Reeve is sent back to his own time, and away from the woman he has given his heart to, your heart just sinks.

Quote : ” The man of my dreams has almost faded now. The one I have created in my mind. The sort of man each woman dreams of, in the deepest and most secret reaches of her heart. I can almost see him now before me. What would I say to him if he were really here? “Forgive me. I have never known this feeling. I have lived without it all my life. Is it any wonder, then, I failed to recognise you? You, who brought it to me for the first time. Is there any way that I can tell you how my life has changed? Any way at all to let you know what sweetness you have given me? There is so much to say. I cannot find the words. Except for these: I love you”. Such would I say to him if he were really here. ”

Final Note :

Who is your ‘One that Got Away’? Did you have someone in your life that was tragically taken from you, or maybe you were tragically taken from them? And do you regret the decision’s made and wish so badly to be beside your soul mate again? If you’ve ever had a Jamie, someone who has changed your life for the better, or you’ve lost an all-sacrificing beautiful specimen like Sam, then it’s quite likely you’ve known true love.  If you’ve lost that great love, that one person who has changed your life, reach out… and never regret. Love knows no bounds, there’s no rules and every obstacle can be overcome… just like “Ghost” taught us.
