MacGyver, Lethal Weapon getting TV reboots

According to stories at The Hollywood Reporter today, two more 80’s classics are set to be remade for the small screen.

The outlet reports that CBS is working on a “MacGyver” reboot while Fox has its sights set on bringing back “Lethal Weapon”.

Let’s talk about CBS’ “MacGyver” first, which is said to be a “reimagining of the television series of the same name, following a 20-something MacGyver as he gets recruited into a clandestine organization where he uses his knack for solving problems in unconventional ways to help prevent disasters from happening.”

R. Scott Gemmill will write the script and exec produce with Henry Winkler (who exec produced the original series) and Michael Clear of Atomic Monster.

James Wan will also exec produce and direct the potential pilot.

Meanwhile, Fox has given a put-pilot commitment to a TV reboot of “Lethal Weapon”.

Based on the 1987 Mel Gibson/Danny Glover film, the reboot will follow “a Texas cop and former Navy SEAL Martin Riggs (originally played by Gibson) who, following the loss of his wife and baby, moves to Los Angeles to start anew. There, he gets partnered with LAPD detective Roger Murtaugh (Glover), who, having recently suffered a “minor” heart attack, must avoid any stress in his life.”

Matt Miller of Good Session will write and exec produce the show with Lin Pictures’ Dan Lin and Jennifer Gwartz.

“MacGyver” and “Lethal Weapon” join 20th Century Fox TV’s previously announced “A-Team” reboot on an ever-growing list of classic’s getting remade for the small screen. Looks like the era of the remake, reboot and sequel isn’t going anywhere people…
