McKellen, Serkis officially onboard Hobbit

Though it was never not going to happen, Ian McKellen is now officially onboard Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit”, says THR.

The thesp reprises his role as Gandalf.

McKellen, who participated in Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, had been waiting – much like us – for the film to get it’s ass in gear. Assuming, what with Jackson now directing (he took over from Guillermo del Toro, who left due to the film’s unremitting delays), that it didn’t take much to convince the “X-Men” star to return to the fold.

Earlier today it was also announced that Andy Serkis was officially onboard the film to reprise his role as Gollum.

Elijah Wood and Cate Blanchett are also signed on to reprise their “Rings” roles for the feature, with Orlando Bloom in negotiations to make an appearance as Legolas.

The first of the two “Hobbit” movies begins shooting on Valentine’s Day in New Zealand.
