Molly Shannon talks Kath & Kim

Will she don a blonde perm?

If there’s one thing I’m a) not looking forward to b) betting will stink c) guarantee will be axed after only half-a-dozen episodes it’s this new American version of local comedy hit “Kath & Kim” – a show so uniquely Australian that you need a customs declaration to watch it offshore.

Molly Shannon, who has been picked to play the new ‘Kath’ in the U.S version, talked to The Herald Sun about the series.

“Only the pilot has been written so far – and that’s fairly close to the original pilot of the Australian show. They changed some things, but they didn’t change a lot. The way Kath dresses – the shoulder pads and the white outfits – there is probably an equivalent of that in America. I don’t know exactly what part of town you would say they’re form, but those are outfits I’ve seen on people, certainly”.

Will she wear a blonde perm like Jane Turner does in the Oz version?

“Oh my god, the perm is so perfect on Kath! We’re trying on wigs this week. I don’t know if we’ll do exactly that, but that is the funniest, it’s so great”.

And no, a ‘Kim’ has not been chosen yet.

“Jane (Turner) and Gina (Riley) created the characters first and the show came out of those characters. This is in reverse – it’s already created and the actors are plugging in. So it’s a bit strange, but I hope I can find somebody I can work well with”.
