New Star Wars movie for 2020; Rogue One tracking soft?

The “Star Wars” name isn’t disappearing from theaters anytime yet.

Disney CEO Bob Iger told investors on a call today that they’ll be pumping out “Star Wars” movies for at least the next four or five years – including a previously-unannounced one in 2020.

The next cab off the rank for the brand is “Rogue One : A Star Wars Story”, out this Christmas. While most are anticipating it to do big business, Iger doesn’t sound as optimistic. “We never felt it would do the level that ‘Force Awakens’ did”, Iger says of the Felicity Jones starrer. It’s an “an experiment, of sorts,” Iger said, adding “It’s really interesting in terms of ‘Star Wars’ storytelling. ‘Star Wars’ has only been told as a saga, and this is a moment in time … we love what we’ve seen.”

And then, next year, we’re back in business with the traditional series, with “Star Wars Episode VIII” hitting theaters. A rumour doing the rounds suggest that one of the series’ original heroes might be biting the dust in the film… but we can’t help but agree with Inverse who say it’s very, very unlikely Lucasfilm will kill off this fan favourite.
