New Watchmen and Trek casting

Mr Manhattan and Captain Kirk potentials?

Billy Crudup (“Mission Impossible 3”, “Almost Famous”) will play Mr Manhattan in the “Watchmen” movie, according to a report on CHUD.

Ironically, I hear that that role was originally earmarked for Tom Cruise, one of Crudup’s good pals and constant collaborators (they worked together on “MI:3”, but Cruise also produced Crudup’s films “Almost Famous” and “Without Limits”). More recently, Keanu Reeves has been linked to the role. Seems they’ve got a mighty long wish list for the part.

Says Devin at the site, “A very reliable source tells me that [director Zack] Snyder has settled on Crudup for the role of Watchmen’s only super-powered character, a scientist who accidentally gets annihilated on an atomic level and reconstructs himself into a big, naked, blue, floating demigod.”

Meantime, actor Sam Rockwell is the latest name being tossed about for the role of the young Captain James T.Kirk in J.J Abram’s forthcoming “Star Trek” restart – granted it’s Sam himself whose talking up the role.

“I would love to play Captain Kirk. That’s a great part,” the “Hitchiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” star tells the MTV Movies Blog, adding — with a nod towards his role in “Galaxy Quest” — “Great costumes!”

But there’s more to playing Kirk than the right wardrobe, Rockwell mused. There’s. Also. The. (Long Pause) Halting. Voice. “I would love to be a William Shatner reincarnation,” Rockwell insisted. “[But] I don’t know if I could copy Bill Shatner. I mean, he’s just too genius. I don’t know if I could copy that cadence.”

Don’t see it myself. In fact, I don’t see any of the rumoured names – including fan fave for the part, Matt Damon – as Kirk. Go for an unknown. Start afresh.

Meanwhile, Bill Shatner told IGN that he’s not a part of the new movie – but Leonard Nimoy is.

“There’s a Star Trek movie and I called Leonard. I said, ‘Leonard, have you heard?’ He said, ‘Yes, I have.’ I said, ‘What do you mean?’ He said, ‘I’ve read the script.’ I said, ‘Is it a good script?’ He says, ‘Yeah.’ I said, ‘Am I in it?’ And there was a pause. He said no and then he began to laugh. I went through the phone as I grabbed him by the throat. He’s in it. I’m not in it.”
