New Wizard of Oz to be helmed by Watchmen director

Nicole Kassell (“Watchmen”) will direct New Line’s adaptation of “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz”.

The book, as you’ll know, was first transformed into the 1939 classic “The Wizard of Oz” starring Judy Garland. Since that film is still part of Warner’s library, Kassell can use elements like the ruby slippers in her film, something rival projects at other studios haven’t been able to do.

Kassell, you’ll recall, won both a DGA and an Emmy for her work on HBO’s adaptation of the graphic novel “Watchmen”.
