Watcha think of Ricky Gervais’ hosting job on the Golden Globes?
I thought it was great, but I’m not surprised a few people – namely those with the surnames ‘Travolta’, ‘Kutcher’, ‘Allen’, ‘Downey’, Gibson’ – didn’t take too kindly to some of his jokes. In some respects though, I think the best defense any of the ‘victims’ could’ve armed themselves with is a smile and a laugh – Bruce Willis seemed to get a kick out of Gervais; Steve Carell too – it proves you’ve got a sense of humour … or even if you don’t, gives the impression you do. Downey’s moment was strange; he proceeded to attack Gervais’ for his ‘mean’ jabs but then lunged into his own slightly-offensive spiel about how Hollywood’s actresses improve after they sleep with him… before somewhat propositioning the much-younger Emma Stone. Um.. who’s got the distasteful jokes then?
Whatever the case, a lot of Hollywood hated Gervais’ ‘performance’. The public sure didn’t though, it was one of the highest rating Globes ever!
You may have noticed that, about half-way through the evening, Gervais disappeared. Where did he go? Was he yanked off stage by one of those stage cane’s seen in ol’ Gene Kelly movies? Did Alec Baldwin take him out to the parking lot and beat the bejesus out of him… only stopping once he admitted to being a fan of “Malice”?
We have the answer. Gervais has spoken out about the Globes controversy and where he actually got to…
“I did every single introduction I was meant to,” he tells THR. “There just happened to be a long gap. This is because I was allowed to choose who I would introduce in advance. I obviously chose presenters who I had the best jokes for. (And who I knew had a good sense of humor).”
HFPA president Philip Berk, who Gervais said, “I just had to help him off the toilet and pop his teeth in”, admits the comic crossed the line.
“Some of the things he said were totally unacceptable,” added Berk.
