Last year, actor Ricky Gervais hosted the 66th Annual Golden Globes and much to the displeasure of some actors, i.e. Downey Jr, Travolta and Cruise to name a few, took several jabs at actors and actresses alike, causing some of them to be offended. If you watched it last year, Gervais was missing halfway through the show & eventually explained his disappearance:
“I did every single introduction I was meant to,” he tells THR. “There just happened to be a long gap. This is because I was allowed to choose who I would introduce in advance. I obviously chose presenters who I had the best jokes for. (And who I knew had a good sense of humor).”
HFPA president Philip Berk, who Gervais said, “I just had to help him off the toilet and pop his teeth in”, admits the comic crossed the line.
“Some of the things he said were totally unacceptable,” added Berk.
Well, apparently, the HFPA didn’t seem to care about who he offended, because the comedian is back to host the Golden Globes for a third year. Celebrities, brace yourselves and work on your fake as hell smiles and polite smiles while working on your death stare. Here’s the press release confirming the news:
After weeks of rumors it’s finally official – Ricky Gervais will be back to host the Golden Globes for a third year.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association voted for the controversial British comedian’s return after meeting with NBC official Doug Vaughn.
While many welcome Gervais’s return, not everyone is happy with the decision because last year his blunt one-liners targeting big-name celebrities caused anger and resentment in some quarters. After the show Gervais dismissed the possibility of coming back for a third time, but he gradually warmed to the idea and last month met with HFPA President Dr. Aida Takla-O’Reilly in Paris to discuss it. He said recently that the idea of going back behind the podium “is very tempting.”
The Golden Globes awards ceremony, which will be televised worldwide, will be held on January 15 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
Gervais also tweeted the following this afternoon:
“Just told Billy Crystal he’d better not use any of my holocaust or pedophile material at The Oscars. He agreed (true)”
And taking to his blog, Gervais explains why he decided to host the shindig for a third time:
It was a tough decision to be honest. There were many pros and cons. I loved doing it, but I was worried that I couldn’t improve on last year. What actually tipped the balance and made me say yes, was the fact that it would shut up all those f***ing idiots who said that I’d never be invited back. Is that the wrong reason to do something? Ha ha. I think it is. Now here’s the thing. The outrage I caused was of course, as usual, totally out of proportion to the things I said. I don’t think anyone had any right to be offended but they were. This year I’m going to make sure their offence is completely justified. The best thing about it is writing the gags. I love writing one liners. Particularly when they can’t be used in any other context. It gives them a special weight on the night if you know what I mean.
