Guy Ritchie looks to pull a magical sword out of a stone over at Warner Bros, looking to make a new version of “King Arthur” at the studio.
Ritchie has wanted to do a “King Arthur” film for years, first developing a project – with writer John Hodge – back in 2010, but the project was nudged out of the way by a rival project… which is the one he’s now attached to. Funny how things turn out, right?
Deadline says Ritchie has revived a project that was set up at WB a few years ago; David Dobkin (“The Change-Up”) was set to direct it at that stage, with Kit Harrington (“Game of Thrones”) and Joel Kinnaman (“RoboCop”) headlining. With the budget spiraling out of control, the studio decided to axe it. There was hope for it again, shortly after, when Colin Farrell expressed interest in doing the movie, but the deal never came off, and Dobkin decided to give the project up.
But with Ritchie now expressing interest in the project, there’s a chance it might (finally) get made.
The Brit, a favourite at Warner Bros thanks to his successful “Sherlock Holmes” franchise, is apparently planning an ambitious six-film franchise. It goes without saying that, without “Harry Potter” to rely on each year, Warner Bros wouldn’t be opposed to a successful long-running adventure series.
“Awake” scribe Joby Harold wrote the script for the (first) film.
Ritchie’s next film is the film adaptation of TV classic “The Man from U.N.C.L.E” starring Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer.
