Caffeinated Clint
Jim Carrey’s the type of actor – and it’s fair enough, if you ask me – who doesn’t care to remain attached to projects that linger in the bowels of development hell for years. One such case is “The Three Stooges”, a film that’s been in the works for the best part of a decade, and one in which Carrey remained onboard for a couple of years before (having put weight on for his role in the film, only to be told it wasn’t happening… again) jumping ship.
Interestingly enough though, Carrey’s still attached to play the lead role of newspaper columnist Robert Ripley in the “Ripley’s Believe it or Not” movie. The actor has been attached to this one – a film once budgeted in the $200 m range! – for years. At one stage Tim Burton was set to shoot Carrey in the flick, but it never happened. And if memory serves me right, there was even whispers that the film might shoot in the new Docklands studios in Melbourne. Black clouds have been hanging over the project for quite some time.
Anyway, the film is back on (clouds must have subsided). Eric Roth, the screenwriter behind “Forrest Gump” and “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”, has been hired to do a “complete rewrite overhaul” of Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski’s script, says Deadline. One would imagine Roth would be quite suitable for this job – what with his knack for the quirky and the eccentric.
Robert Ripley, for those not in the know, was a newspaper columnist who collected as many wacky and extraordinary stories as he could for his column. His column ultimately inspired a popular TV show and museums – one of which you Aussies can find in Surfers Paradise, Queensland.
