Shane Black leaves a Death Note

We might never get to see, let alone read (what with Fox kicking off the whole ‘rid the online world of unproduced scripts’ charge) Shane Black’s “Lethal Weapon 5” treatment (Mel Gibson nixed the idea), but thankfully there will be other binded offerings from Black – they just won’t feature Martaugh or Riggs. And anyone that’s familiar with the back catalogue of Mr Black will know just how good of a good thing that is.

Unfortunately Black won’t be scripting his next, he’s only directing it, but nonetheless it sounds like a goodie.

The “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” helmer will direct “Death Note”, based on the Japanese manga about a notebook that can kill anybody whose name is written inside of it.

“It’s my favorite manga, I was just struck by its unique and brilliant sensibility,” Black said to Deadline. “What we want to do is take it back to that manga, and make it closer to what is so complex and truthful about the spirituality of the story, versus taking the concept and trying to copy it as an American thriller.”

Black was working on a big time Spy film with Mel Gibson at one stage too, but I imagine, what with Gibbo’s waning popularity, that that’s fallen by the wayside?
