Slumdog Millionaire [DVD]

By Ashley Hillard

The Oscar winner of ’09 is clearly a good film. Did it deserve the Oscar over ”The Reader” and ”Frost / Nixon”?, I don’t think so. This colorful story follows the lives of two brothers, one ends up on India’s ”Who Wants To Be A Millionaire”, the other ends up running with drug lords. There is doubt surrounding the truthfulness of the contestant and the stories of how he arrives at his answers are interwoven throughout the film, including his romance with a young woman, played by the now internationally known Freida Pinto. This movie mixes Hollywood and Bollywood and is a smart move on the financing end for Hollywood, but this wasn’t really the strongest contender for best picture this year.

Extras

Bonus features on the DVD include commentary by director Danny Boyle and star Dev Patel, as well as producer Christian Colson and writer Simon Beaufoy. Deleted scenes are also included, as well as a “cutdown,” something like a trailer. Included in the language selection is Hindi.

On a side note, there is a preview for ”S. Darko”, a follow up film to ”Donnie Darko”. Not sure how this will sit with fans. While it looks interesting, doesn’t seem like a good call to make another one.
