Stargate, Astro Boy remakes move forward

Nicolas Wright and James A. Woods are in final talks to write the long-gestating “Stargate” reboot.

Roland Emmerich, who helmed the original ’90s film, will be back in the director’s chair.

From the sounds of it, the new film will be a straight-up remake – with newbies brought in to recreate the roles performed by Kurt Russell and James Spader in the 1994 film. It’s expected that the new film will be the first in a trilogy.

Wright and Woods worked with Emmerich and regular co-conspirator Dean Devlin – producing the “Stargate” redo – on the upcoming “Independence Day 2”.

In other science-fiction/remake news, a live-action feature based on the classic “Astro Boy” toon is on the way.

Animal Logic, the Australian-based animation outfit that worked on flicks like “The Lego Movie”, are reportedly helping craft a film that’ll be more “Iron Man” than “for ages 5 and up”.

“We’ve seen his as a manga, an anime and an animated movie but we’ve never seen him as a live action movie or him as a superhero,” said producer Zareh Nalbandian. “We actually see him in the same league as an Iron Man.”
