Steve Guttenberg's on a mission to Mars

At one-time he was hotter than an open fire, but lately, Steve Guttenberg’s career has been reduced to pretty much no more than wearing the director’s cap on a couple of under-the-radar telemovies.

All’s about to change in his favour though.

Guttenberg has joined the cast of UPN’s "Veronica Mars", beginning with the critically acclaimed drama’s second season premiere.

Guttenberg will star as Woody Goodman, a charismatic major league baseball team owner and leading candidate in the local race for mayor of Neptune, Calif. To show his support for the community, his daughter will be transferring from her private school to Neptune High. He will appear in at least seven episodes.

It could be the kick-off to a chunky comeback for the "Police Academy" and "Cocoon" star : He’ll also be starring in the upcoming mini-series remake of "The Poseidon Adventure" and is believed to be involved in an eighth "Police Academy" movie, reprising his role as the unremittingly popular Officer Mahoney.

"The Police Academy films gave me so much opportunity, and I’ve got nothing but a good attitude towards them, I’ll probably make it", Guttenberg recently told Moviehole.

Also joining "Veronica Mars" for it’s second season is former "Angel" star Charisma Carpenter. She’ll play Kendall Casablancas, a sexy trophy wife and stepmother to brothers Dick (Ryan Hansen) and Cassidy "Beaver" (Kyle Gallner) Casablancas, two of Veronica’s (Kristen Bell) rival, affluent schoolmates.

Guttenberg will be seen in at least seven episodes next season, and Carpenter, six.
