SyFy takes another trip down the crumbling yellow-brick road

While we await the inevitable announcement that SyFy will rebrand themselves as the only channel in the globe to offer exclusive ‘Sharknado’ content 24-7 -“Nightly News with FinTwister”, “Orca vs. Tornado”, “Sharknado and Friends : Superhero Hour” – the network will continue in it’s plight to crib the classics.

Next up, a modern-day “Wizard of Oz” called “Warriors of Oz”, according to Deadline.

The mini-series is the brainchild of “Wanted” helmer Timur Bekmambetov, and is said to fix on “a warrior from present day Earth [who] is transported to a post-apocalyptic future Oz where he must team up with three other warriors: Heartless, Brainless, and Coward, in order to defeat the evil Wizard who has enslaved the land.”

As interesting as this sounds, and while I don’t doubt Berkmambetov will bring something unique to the screen, is anyone else a bit over these “Oz” reworkings!? They’ve tried plenty of times to turn Baum’s source material into a worthwhile TV venture, and they’ve never really worked. I might have suggested Bekmambetov would’ve been better off pitching the network some sort of “Wanted” TV spin-off – using the unproduced sequel screenplay, since it’s never going to get used otherwise, and more so, because there actually seems to be a hunger for more from that world (as opposed to Oz).
