The Flash season 4: promises more fun; Tom Felton demoted

When we last saw The Flash, he was entering the Speed Force and leaving his fiance and team behind. The trailer unveiled at Comic-Con sees everyone left behind without Barry struggling to pick up the pieces, and fight battles without him. When an unknown (to us) villain shows up and demands The Flash, the team must try and get Barry back.

Barry will have been stuck in the Speed Force for six months by the time he returns, and the experience will have changed him. However, this is not necessarily a bad thing, with showrunner Todd Helbing telling ComicBook.com that The Flash will come out of it “changed in a different and more positive way.”

Helbing also promises a more fun season, after season three’s doom and gloom stories:

“Last year, once we showed Iris die in the future, to keep up that doom and gloom, it becomes a burden, and not just on us writing-wise, on the show and it just sort of had this pall over the season that I think we didn’t expect to be so heavy,” Helbing told ComicBook.com. “I’m not trying to say anything bad about season 3. I love season 3, and I love Savitar, and I love the story we told, but I think that’s about as dark as I ever want to go with the show. So yeah, I think that was a conscious effort of ours to really go back to everybody enjoyed being on this team and with each other, and make The Flash have fun again. I’m really excited about the scripts so far; they’re really, really funny.”

One thing that’s going to be missing from the next season is Tom Felton as a regular. EW is reporting that the Harry Potter star (sorry Tom, you can’t escape that role just yet) will not be returning as a season regular. Felton’s character Julian was a season 3 regular, as a part of Team Flash and a love interest to Caitlin Snow (played by Danielle Panabaker), but was also notably missing from the season 4 trailer. That’s not to say he won’t return at all, but no news has been confirmed as yet, and with the season still filming, anything is possible.

New characters in the 4th go include Neil Sandilands to portray villain The Thinker, Danny Trejo as Breacher and Kim Engelbrecht to play The Mechanic, and Devoe’s right hand woman.

“The Flash” speeds back onto teles everywhere on October 10th.
