The Picture of Dorian Gray movie being made, with a twist

Annie Clark, aka St. Vincent (best known for her work as a experimental rock multi-instrumentalist) is directing a film adaptation of the 1880 novel by Oscar Wilde “The Picture of Dorian Gray”. The adaptation comes with a twist, however, with the main character being a woman.

The classic Victorian age story is about a hedonistic man whose self-portrait ages while he stays eternally young. In the film version, the protagonist will be female. David Birke is on board to pen the script. This will be Clark’s first feature-length directorial effort, and it will be distributed via Lionsgate.

“The Picture of Dorian Gray” was Wilde’s only novel, and he is well-known for his plays, poetry, essays and fiction works. It’s been adapted a number of times, but never with a female lead.
