Tron 3 prepares to get it’s game on!

Aint it Cool News has confirmed a recent rumour from What’s Playing that a second “Tron” sequel is on it’s way to being greenlit.

According to Harry Knowles, “TRON Legacy”, released in December to mixed reviews, is “set to cross $300 million worldwide” and “has proved, beyond a doubt that there is an audience that buys this science fiction fantasy.”

But it’s not just the film that’s helped the brand biggen – the merchandise (those light cycles; action figures, and so on) and CD soundtrack (by Daft Punk) have also helped Tron’s case. “Disney is beginning to realize, TRON could be a franchise”, wrote Knowles.

In December, What’s Playing’s Hollywood Insider column reported that the “creatives and execs involved in the latest film are pushing on under the assumption that the film will make a profit, and for that reason, they’re already brainstorming over the next sequel.”

One of the ideas being tossed around for the next sequel includes incorporating the character of Yori, played by Cindy Morgan in the 1982 original.

Oh, the reason she wasn’t in “Tron Legacy”?

“I’m told that this latest film was essentially “Flynn’s story” and because of that, some characters.. weren’t needed”, said the site. Producers decided that “instead of having a familiar face “walk past in the background” those characters might be best “saved for a later film where they’d potentially have something to do“”.

“There’s about five or six different story lines in consideration for the next film, and at least a couple of them feature the character of Laura, who would be married to Alan Bradley (Bruce Boxleitner’s character). In addition, Cillian Murphy is onboard the film, should it go ahead, playing two characters. I don’t think I need to say any more about that.”

The site said that Jeff Bridges wasn’t a lock to return as Kevin Flynn.

“It’s not for sure that he will be back” I’m told. “But if Alan and Laura are back, there will at least still be a link to the original”.

I don’t know why I think of a “Tron” movie without Jeff Bridges, but I do like the sound of more ‘Grid’ action all the same. More Bruce. More Cindy. More Daft Punk. More of Olivia Wilde’s legs. Yes, I’ll be there.
