TV : Ghost Rider, Billy Joel series, Thirtysomething sequel

The Gabriel Luna-starring “Ghost Rider” series  at Hulu is dead.

The streamer has opted to abandon the “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D” spin-off, four months after the project was commissioned straight-to-series, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Luna would’ve reprised his role as “S.H.I.E.L.D” guestie Robbie Reyes, who is consumed by hellfire and supernaturally bound to a demon. Reyes lives on the Texas/Mexico border and when he unleashes the Rider, he brings vengeance for the innocents he encounters, but struggles to control the power he wields.

MGM Television is teaming with Universal Music Publishing Group to bring Billy Joel’s music to life as a scripted “arc-thology” called “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant”.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show will see each episode based on lyrics of his hits and populated by characters from his songs, including the Stranger, the Piano Man, Mamma Leone and Sgt. O’Leary. The tracks will be reimagined and rearranged by Joel’s music team — with his input — and take his tunes in new directions.

Kevin Fox is creating the series, which will be shopped to networks.

A sequel series to ’80s classic “Thirtysomething” is on the way from original duo Marshall Herskovitz and Ed Zwick. Written by Herskovitz and Zwick and to be directed by Zwick, the revival of the ABC drama “revolves around the children of the characters in the original show, which are now 30-something themselves”.

The original cast, including Ken Olin, Melanie Mayron, Timothy Busfield, Patricia Wettig, Peter Horton and Polly Draper, are expected to be involved but no deals have been made with any actors yet.

Deadline says that although ABC is pursuing the series, understandably, offers from other nets are also being accepted.
