“In my day….” well, seriously, the trailers weren’t much at all; in fact they were just a few snippets from the movie spliced together with a master of the monotone lending his lungs to an overlaid audio track. Trailers have since become a business of their own – they can make or break a movie.
And it doesn’t matter if the trailer offers up a false representation of the movie either – hello “Cold Creek Manor”! – so long as the studios get bums on seats.
Having said that, what they can do with trailers now is remarkable – – I think it goes without saying that many-a-filmmaker or trailer-maker (usually separate entities) is more concerned with their teaser or trailer playing perfect than the actual product. As a result, these things usually all look great (We have definitely come a long way since the days of the “Staying Alive” and “Santa Claus : The Movie” trailers.)
Now though, we’re getting excited about ‘teasers for trailers’ – short snippets from a trailer that’s due to be released, as is the case here with the first “Breaking Dawn” trailer. The full trailer for this latest “Twilight” film will air on Sunday’s MTV Music Awards but the network have released a 10-second promo to promote the trailer. If it wasn’t so much about commerce it’d be comical.
