Weekend Quick News – January 8, 2011

The “Long List” for the Orange British Academy Film Awards in 2010 has been released this morning. Tom Hooper’s “The King’s Speech” and Darren Aronofsky’s “Black Swan” led overall mentions with a whopping 15 a piece, including picture, director and screenplay (Source : Indie Wire)

A possible production schedule for Zack Snyder’s “Superman : Man of Steel” has surfaced. According to the brief, principal photography begins 22 August 2011 and shooting will run until April 2012. The post-production dates are said to be May 1, 2012 through November 2012.  A number of websites received this information, and from the same source, so take it with a grain of salt for the moment. Captain America” helmer Joe Johnston says the latter was a much more joyous production to work on than 2010’s ill-fated “The Wolfman”.”The two experiences could not have been more different, in fact in many ways (certainly not all) they were polar opposites”, says the filmmaker.  In other words, it’s fab vs. fucked. I think it’s safe to say the ‘screener’ is headed towards extinction. Fox Filmed Entertainment (FFE) and iTunes are offering nearly 100,000 Screen Actors Guild (SAG) members Fox Searchlight Pictures’ “127 Hours”, “Black Swan” and “Conviction” in HD from iTunes for viewing on their iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, Mac or PC, or with Apple TV on their HD TV. The films will be available to members from January 7-28 during the SAG awards consideration window. (Source : Fox Searchlight)

Spartacus” producer Robert Tapert (also one of the geniuses – shut up wife! – behind “Evil Dead”) says the production is still on the hunt for a new lead. “We are looking at actors to play Spartacus,” Tapert said. “They’ve committed to going forward with a season two. Andy Whitfield who’s unable to play Spartacus will be recast. That’ll be a separate announcement in the coming months as to who is the new Spartacus.” Original lead Andy Whitfield was, of course, forced to bow out due to his battle with Cancer (Source : Screen Junkies)

Wonder Woman just can’t get a break. David E.Kelley’s proposed TV reboot of the DC comic favourite has been rejected by every television network in town, it was revealed this weekend. Sources say that the show’s high production costs coupled with the failure of the similar-themed “Bionic Woman” reboot may have put off the nets. (Source : EW)

Filmmaker Gary Ross says the feature film adaptation of “Hunger Games” (which I actually just purchased for my wife to read) will be of the PG-13 variety. Ross, without confirming the film’s rumoured $60m budget, says “I’m not allowed to confirm the budget number, but I will say it’s enough money to make the movie well and not disappoint a single fan. It’s a lot less money than a lot of other franchises or tentpoles of the same stature. But I don’t mind budget constraints. Sometimes they can provide creative solutions that are often better than what you would’ve had if you hadn’t had to think it through so rigorously.” (Source : EW)

Musician Trent Reznor will, just as he did for the director’s “Social Network”, do the music for David Fincher’s upcoming “Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” remake. Are you creaming too? (Source : Livestream)

Armie Hammer (“The Social Network”) says for his role in Clint Eastwood’s “J.Edgar“, he’ll be required to play Clyde Toulson both as a young man and as a man in his seventies. “Makeup stuff comes within the next couple weeks. We’re definitely doing a lot of wardrobe stuff right now, but the makeup stuff we haven’t done yet.” Hammer has also revealed that Judi Dench is playing Hoover’s mother in the pic. Vera Farmiga and Elle Fanning will play mother and daughter in “Pure Life“. The indie drama tells of a young woman, on the hunt for love, who finally finds a boy she deems worth enough of having sex with. Van Fischer directs. (Source : The Playlist)

Elijah Wood (today confirmed as returning as Frodo for “The Hobbit”) will star in a new mini-series version of “Treasure Island“. The 2 part/ 4 hour miniseries will be airing on SKY TV in the UK. Alan Moloney is producing with Steve Barron directing. Eddie Izzard will also star. (Source : Collider)

A document outlining the characters and situations of the upcoming “The Dark Knight Rises” may have been leaked. According to the doc, the script features Deadshot and The Black Mask as the villains with the oft-rumoured Talia al Ghul making a brief appearance. In addition, “Apparently Nolan has merged the characters of Hugo Strange and Edward Nashton. Nashton, like Strange in the comics, figures out Batman’s identity and toys with him. Despite Nashton’s appearance, no mention is made of The Riddler. He would appear to be a completely different character.” Is it legit? Shit, I dunno… (Source : ScriptFlags)

Hugh Keays-Byrne has confirmed rumours that he’ll be a part of the “Mad Max Fury Road” cast when/if the film gets back up (“I understand we start again in a year, gods willing and the wind right!”). The Australian actor has also stated how disappointed he was that “Justice League”, in which he was to star as Martian Manhunter, was canceled, noting that WETA had ‘woven’ some real magic on it. Naomie Harris (“Pirates of the Caribbean”) is up for the female lead in director Ron Howard’s film adaptation of “The Dark Tower” trilogy. (Source : NY Post)

Nicolas Cage has essentially confirmed that “Ghost Rider : Spirit of Vengeance” is an out-and-out reboot. “[It’s going to be] very different,” he said. “A completely new experience and that’s how the directors choose to see it. I mean there’s even a new origin sequence.” (Source : UKPA)
