Will Indiana Jones continue without Harrison Ford?

In, well, ‘duh’ news, Disney today suggested that they will eventually put an “Indiana Jones” film into production that doesn’t feature Harrison Ford. Being 73, it’s only natural that someone else will be hearing the fedora in due time.

Before any of that though, the plan is to give fans the “Indiana Jones” film they want – with Ford back in his [other] trademark role. Unlike his brief return to “Star Wars” though, it’s been confirmed Ford won’t be written a death scene in the third act of the film.

Speaking to THR, Disney chairman Bob Iger said the Indiana Jones we know and love will definitely be back for the next. After that, they have to reassess things – as they likely change directions (maybe a young ‘Indy’ movie? spin-off? new actor playing Jones – at a younger age?) and forge on without Ford.

“Right now, we’re focused on a reboot, or a continuum and then a reboot of some sort. Well, we’ll bring him back, then we have to figure out what comes next. That’s what I mean. It’s not really a reboot, it’s a boot – a reboot. I don’t know. We [got] Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones in the film. But then what’s the direction? I’ve had discussions about what the direction is, [but] I don’t want to get into it. I don’t think it reaches the scale of the universe of Star Wars, but I see making more. It won’t be just a one-off.”

Steven Spielberg will be back at the helm of the next “Indiana Jones”. It’s likely, if Ford doesn’t continue on after the next, that Spielberg too might take a step back from the series. If I was a betting man, and I’m not after losing my trunks at the TAB last Melbourne Cup, I’d say Disney will do to the Indiana Jones character what they’re doing to the Han Solo character – doing somewhat of a prequel series, with a new actor playing the character in his prime.
