Bill Nighy (he’s great, but those twenty-five “Underworld” movies he did also attest to the fact that he’ll do anything that pays) and Catherine Zeta-Jones (guess “Chicago” was over a decade ago now..) have signed for a feature film version of classic Brit TV laffer “Dad’s Army”.
Toby Jones, Tom Courtenay, Michael Gambon, Mark Gatiss, Blake Harrison, Danny Mays, Bill Paterson, Sarah Lancashire, Alison Steadman and Annette Crosbie are also onbaord the film, to be directed by “Johnny English Reborn” (oh Jesus, it just keeps getting worse!) Oliver Parker.

The story is set in 1944 as the Allies are poised to invade France and finally defeat the German army. But in Walmington-on-Sea, morale amongst the Home Guard (local volunteers otherwise ineligible for military service) is low. Their new mission to patrol the Dover army base is a great chance to revive their spirits and reputation – until glamorous journalist Rose Winters arrives to write about their exploits, setting the pulses racing and putting the local women on red alert. MI5 then discover a radio signal sent direct to Berlin from Walmington-on-Sea: There’s a spy on the loose and the outcome of the war is suddenly at stake.
No word on whether it’ll be as wretched as “McHale’s Navy” or as unwatchable as “The Honeymooners” movie with Cedric the Entertainer (as Ralph!) but one thing’s for sure, Zeta Jones will look good in camouflage cut-offs.
