You Don’t Mess With The Zombo

Anthony, er, Captain on board!!

Kevin Munroe (“TMNT”) will direct a feature film version of “El Zombie Fantasma”. Producing are Munroe and Death Ray Films partners Robert Sanchez (of IESB.net) and Chris Patton.

Munroe will write and direct the film, an adaptation of a popular Dark Horse comic described by many as a ‘Latino Hellboy’, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Published in 2005, “Zombo” tells the story of a murdered, temperamental Mexican wrestler who returns from his fiery damnation to play guardian angel to a troubled Los Angeles teenager. Zombo learns the teen is not what she seems and that their fates are intertwined. The character was created by David Wilkins and Munroe when they worked at a video game company. They will act as co-producers. Jose Martinez of Maya and Kellvin Chavez, who runs the Web site Latino Review, also are producing “Zombo.”

The plan is to not only sequelize “Zombo”, but launch it as an animated series.

IESB has the teaser poster for the film up here.

I wasn’t aware Sanchez and Chavez were involved in films too – but that’s amazing, well done gents. Seems most of the webmasters are getting their own movies up these days!

Let’s take a look…

Moviehole’s Clint, of course, is doing “Condition Dead” with Patrick Lussier, “First Howl”, and “Radio America”. He’s also involved in the upcoming “Complacent” and “Death Keeps Coming”. Not only that he works for Capital Arts/Push – who are doing “Smokin’ Aces 2”, “Prince and Me 4” etc. Got enough going on, bro?

JoBlo’s Dave Davis, who wrote the script for “Condition Dead”, is also doing another movie with Clint called “Blood and Circus”. It’s a terrific horror-western that, in my personal opinion, is Davis’s best script yet. Too bad Josh Brolin’s doing “Jonah Hex” though – he would’ve been great.

Nick Nunziata has done a flick called “Grizzly Park” which featured “24” star Glenn Morshower. Nice. More notably though, he’s involved in the long-gestating feature film version of “Meg” which Jan DeBont (sp?) was/is attached to direct.

The Movie Blog’s John Campea is the writer/director of “The Anniversary”. Apparently Campea had serious offers from quite a few folks willing to cough up green for the script but passed. Power to him! (Sounds like Clint and his “Howl” project).

Aint it Cool News’ Harry Knowles has been making appearances in films for years now (“The Faculty”, “Monkeybone”) but has only recently started producing stuff. He was involved, for a short time, in a feature-film version of “John Carter of Mars”. Meantime, his former cohort Drew McWeeny wrote an episode of TVs “Masters of Horror” and also “Mortal Kombat 3”. Well done!

Congrats to all those guys!
