Bad Robot’s “Cloverfield” franchise may be coming to a surprise end – especially if reports are true that Paramount is keen to sell the latest film in the series to streaming service Netflix.
“Cloverfield Station” (that’s the rumoured title, anyway) is the third in a series of films following “Cloverfield” and “10 Cloverfield Lane. Paramount were originally set to release the movie, which stars David Oyelowo, Ziyi Zhang, Daniel Bruhl, Elizabeth Debicki and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, on April 20.
Sources tell Heat Vision that Netflix are in talks to acquire the movie.
The culling of Paramount’s release slate is being spearheaded by chairman Jim Gianopulos, sources tell the trade. The exec took over the reins last spring, watching the movies he had inherited and making some hard choices.
“He sat down and looked at what is theatrical, what is not in this day and age,” says one source. Certain movies were not making the cut, including, it seems “Cloverfield Station” – which some say needed more work to cut it as a theatrical release. Producer JJ Abrams has been so tied up with the “Star Wars” films that he was unable to dedicate the time to get it into proper shape, suggests the trade.
