He mightn’t have gotten an “Expendables” jersey to wear – heck, he mightn’t have even wanted in on that game; maybe he’s got enough money without having to demote himself to a supporting player just yet – but Steven Seagal got his big smile-worthy moment of appreciation by fronting up for the hammy villain role in Robert Rodriguez’s “Machete”. In my opinion, that was the better flick anyway – and much more of an ’80s throwback than Stallone’s salute to the era.
I don’t know that “Machete” will ultimately do anything for Seagal’s career, but at least his projects are starting to sound a tad more interesting – so maybe it’s inspired him to chase better material.
In addition to the entertaining “True Justice”, the TV actioner that Seagal headlines, about to head into production on it’s second-season, Seagal’s got a couple of fun things in the works*. There’s speak of a Zero Mostel biopic, with Seagal playing the “Fiddler on the Roof” and “The Producers” star, who history buffs will recall was blacklisted from acting in the ’50s. And also, “Maximum Conviction”,a new two-hander with him and Steve Austin as black-ops guys going up against terrorists in a prison. The movie, released by Anchor Bay, is rumoured to be getting – something rare for Seagal – a theatrical release.
(*And though there’s some whispers about Warner Bros relaunching the “Under Siege” franchise, I don’t believe Seagal is involved.)
