Caple Jr replaces Stallone on Creed II

Though originally attached to helm, Sylvester Stallone has handed the directing reigns on “Creed II” to indie newcomer Steven Caple Jr.

Ryan Coogler directed the 2015 film, starring Michael B.Jordan and Stallone, reprising his ‘Rocky’ role. Stallone was set to co-star and direct the sequel but posted on Instagram earlier today that he’d decided Caple Jr (“The Land”) should direct the film because “the character of Adonis Creed reflects this generation, and I believe it is important to have a director who is part of it , that is why I think we are Lucky to have Stephen Caple ,Jr A wonderful new talent take over The directorial chores and make the story as relatable as possible… He and Michael B Jordan will deliver a knockout!”.

Stallone and Cheo Hodari Coker penned the sequel, which will see Jordan’s Adonis Creed going head-to-head with Vitor Drago (read Moviehole’s scoop on the casting call here). Dolph Lundgren will reprise his role as Ivan Drago from “Rocky IV” for the sequel, while “Creed” actress Tessa Thompson is back as Bianca, THR has confirmed.

“Creed 2” opens in theaters November 21, 2018.
