de Bont a contender for Basic Instinct 2 gig

Director Jan de Bont is one name being branded about to direct the recently resurrected "Basic Instinct 2".

de Bont – whose films range from blockbusters "Speed" and "Twister" to the sickly suck-jobs "Tomb Raider 2" and "The Haunting" – worked as DP on the first film, and Moviehole sources have confirmed that he is one name that producers Mario Kassar and Andrew Vanja are considering to helm the follow-up.

de Bont worked with "Basic Instinct" director Paul Verhoeven on many occasions before serving as DP on the 1992 film. Starting his career in 1966 in the Netherlands, de Bont’s first film with Verhoven was "Turkish Delight". The Director and Cinematographer developed a strong personal and professional union based on their time on the film and that continued for some quite time, with de Bont also serving as DP on "Cathy Tippel", "The Fourth Man" and "Flesh and Blood". de Bont, now an [arguably] accomplished director himself, recently inked a deal to produce "The Duelist", for Director Roel Reiné. He has no directing gigs lined up at present.

As for which incarnation of the "Basic Instinct 2" script that’s going to be used, they’re using the Leona Barish and Henry Bean script from the David Cronenberg / John McTiernan days of the project. According to our scooper, the film is on the fast track for a fall start, and possible Summer 2005 release.
