The only film that’s been in development longer than “Ghostbusters 3”?
“The Three Stooges”.
I mean, seriously, this thing has been on the cards for years. It’s jumped from studio to studio. It’s had many actors come and go. It’s had numerous false starts. It’s even rumored to have been put out to pasture a couple of times.
Deadline says the film, which Bobby and Peter Farrelly have been trying to get up now for the best part of a decade, has finally recieved a start date : March 2011. The film also has a new home at Fox, having lost it’s seat at the MGM table. Sounds like a better fit for the boys anyway, what with most of their films being Fox releases – “There’s Something About Mary” and “Me, Myself & Irene”, to name but a couple.
Unfortunately, the production has lost both Sean Penn and Jim Carrey. And there’s also a question mark next to Benicio Del Toro’s name. So casting-wise, the Farrelly’s are back to square one.
Farrelly Brothers’ favourite Richard Jenkins has agreed to play a part in the film though. He’s set to play a Nun at the Orphanage where the ‘Stooges’ are bred.
The filmmaking duo, who say the film will be more “Dumb & Dumber” than anything else they’ve done, tells Deadline : “The script is ready to go, and we are opening up these roles to the world right now. We’ll make it with the best possible people. Our feeling is that no star is too big to audition and no matter who it is, we’re going to have to see him in the role. This is not The Flinstones. You’ve got to be Moe Howard, Larry Fine and Curly Howard, and that could be a major movie star or an unknown.”

Actually, I tell you who they could likely get – heck, they’d definitely get : Mel Gibson. Gibson’s a die-hard “Three Stooges” fan, and years ago was said to be circling this very film. He even produced a TV biopic on the trio. Shit, wouldn’t be at all surprised if he gets the call.
