I Know What Sony's doing next Summer

A few years back – in fact, quite a few, I recall sitting for college exams on the same day and dreaming of a ‘dial up’ connection at home – the net spat out a little bit of news on a third "I Know What You Did Last Summer" film.

According to the trades, circa Clint’s college years, Sony was all set to go on chapter three of the killer fisherman yarn – one of the early teen slasher comeback efforts – but had decided to ditch the original cast (Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr, Muse Watson) in favour of something, well, fresh.

I had a chat to the plucky heroine herself, Jennifer Love Hewitt, after the announcement, to see what she thought of the dumping. As her career was starting to fly at the time, she wasn’t too concerned, simply stressing that she’d be keen to see it.

Clint : Were you surprised when they announced a 3rd "I know what you did" film, with a totally new cast and characters?
Jennifer : Well, not really. I found out about it not too long ago…and I think it will be exciting to see what happens in the 3rd "I Know…". I can’t wait to see it.

As for her co-stars? not so impressed.

Then, as if the killer fisherman had slashed his way through the call-sheet, the film vanished. No more. Gone. Idea – scrapped.

Until today.

According to FilmJerk, plans for a third "I Know What You Did Last Summer", with an all-new cast, are finally set to go ahead.

Sony’s Screen Gems have handed the very unlikely helmer (it’s his first horror) Damon Santostefano ("Bring it On Again", "Three to Tango", "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids : The TV Show") a director’s cap and introduced him to penner Michael Weiss (currently penning "The Butterfly Effect 2").

Expected to hit theatres in the fall of 2006, "I Know what you did Last Summer 3" will tell of "Four teens from a small Colorado town will be victimized by a phantom menace one year after a July Fourth prank gone awry kills one of their buddies. Against the protestation of one of them, the group agree to keep this secret, only to find their friendships torn apart from the strain. The next Independence Day, just before the town’s annual carnival, the four receive intimidating communiqués indicating someone is aware of what happened before. The group suspect the cousin of the dead friend, only to discover they are very much on the wrong track. Can the friends survive and figure out the identity of their tormentor before they end up dead themselves?"

Yup, can’t see a spot for any of the original troupe in that.

Sony has picked out a filmable part of Utah to make the movie – aiming to roll film at the end of August.

And the readers of ‘Dolly’ scream with glee.
