Japan Earthquake hurts Wolverine and Avatar sequels

The recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan has been felt right around the world (not literally, but emotionally-speaking) even in Hollywood. In the wake of Darren Aronofsky’s departure from “The Wolverine”, Twentieth Century Fox are said to have hit the pause button on the project, not only will that give them time to approach a replacement director but it gives Japan, where the film was set to shoot for the next year or so, some time to recover before a studio blocks off it’s streets and makes a mighty big racket. As a result, The Playlist says “The Wolverine”‘s release date may be pushed back from 2012 to 2013.

Another film has also hit a speed-bump as a result of the natural disaster in Japan, James Cameron’s “Avatar” sequel. Coming Attractions says Cameron had planned to go on a diving expedition to the bottom of the Mariana Trench, in Japan, and possibly film some scenes down there. Fox, understandably, aren’t keen to let Cameron do that just at the moment.

Says the site, “…the March 11 9.0 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Japan has put Cameron’s dive plans in jeopardy. Hundreds of aftershocks have been felt since the first quake, and while the intensity of the aftershocks are of lesser strength than the original 9.0 quake, they will go on for an undetermined period of time — perhaps for years. That’s why Cameron’s dive is now in jeopardy; the safety of the divers, including Cameron himself, may now be beyond a point where liability insurance will allow for.

Sending a manned expedition six-and-a-half miles down into the deepest part of the ocean is already a sizeable cause for concern. With this new element of jeopardy, it could be just enough to prevent James Cameron to call action live from the bottom of the sea floor.”

Disappointing, but the real tragedy can be found in the faces of the Japanese not in the pages of a movie magazine.
