If you were one of the 3% of the worldwide population that didn’t buy a ticket to Adam Sandler’s ”The Wedding Singe (1998), then by all means, check out ”Kickin it Old Skool” – to you, it’ll be as fresh as bakery bought bread.
Justin (Jamie Kennedy) has just woken up from a coma after twenty years in the black. It was 1986 when he had his accident – he fell off the stage whilst in a break-dancing competition – so naturally he re-enters the world assuming nothing’s changed. Problem is, it has, big time. He doesn’t even try to change though, nope, he decides to get the ol’ breakdancing team together so that he can finally win the girl of his dreams – the same girl he asked to come back to his place as a youngster to watch ”The Blue Lagoon”.
Jamie – Still can’t figure out how he’s got so far – Kennedy totally disregards the fact that the Sandler comedy spoofed all their was to spoof about the 1980s and lets rip with his Reagan-era piss-take. And, in quite a few spots, he still gets the laugh – rom the “Star Wars” jokes (He heads into a toy store and discovers Jar Jar Binks for the first time, “This isn’t Star Wars!” he exclaims) to the frequent references to old TV shows (there’s a Hasselhoff and K.I.T.T cameo; an Emanuel ‘Webster’ Lewis appearance, and a reminder of the “Different Strokes” theme) some are quite inspired.
Having said that, there’s not nearly enough good gags and witty storytelling to hold one’s attention for an hour-and-a-half. As a skit, it may have worked; it tests the audience by stretching the joke to feature length.
