Destiny’s Child alum LeToya Luckett will play Dionne Warwick, with Lady Gaga as here British singing nemisis Cilla Black and Olympia Dukakis as Warwick’s mentor Marlene Dietrich, in a new biopic announced today at Cannes.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Dionne” is based on a screenplay by Randall Jahnson (“The Doors”) and is based on the singer’s 2010 autobiography “My Life As I See It”.
Danny Glover is also set to appear in the film.
Mario Van Peebles is in talks to direct the film, according to Warwick.
The film will cover the period early in Warwick’s career from 1962 through 1968. Dave Wooley, who co-wrote Warwick’s autobiography and has been working on developing a film on her life for more than a decade, will produce Dionne with AMBI through his WW Film Company shingle. Jack Binder will also produce.
“She is perfect and she has exactly the right look,” Warwick said of Luckett. “She will bring out what is needed for this part.”
Luckett will also perform Warwick’s songs for the film’s soundtrack.
“Dionne” is set to begin production late this year.
