Moviehole MailBag – 7/7/05

Thanks to Adam for steering the ship last week, while I went out for fish. Yep, I’ve got my priorities in order. Anyway, let’s skip the incessantly-souring smarmy opener and get right to this week’s MailBag….now where’s that letter opener? Ouch! there it is.

I don’t know if you know, but the short film ‘Tomorrow’s Memoir’ (which you promoted twice on your website late last year), has been selected to screen at this year’s Comic-Con in San Diego. TM’s been on IFILM for awhile now, so who knows what kind of attendance they may get (as it’s getting to be old news to many I’m sure) – so as a fun marketing gimmick, they’re currently developing a ‘prequel of sorts’ to TM. TM will be screening at the CC (Friday July 15th, 7:00 pm) with a q&a to follow, and I suggest to "stay tuned to the TM website for a prequel of sorts"

Comic-Fan,
Now you know I hate doing plugs for anything less than a crate of Diet Pepsi and stick of Cabana. Will send you my forwarding address.

Is there any word on who was directing, when the “Green Hornet” was being released, when it was going to start in production and filming, etc.? Is this being pushed back into limbo? Is it still under Miramax or is it going to Weinstein Co.? I saw someone post something about Miramax not picking up the option but almost everyone still has it listed under Miramax (of course, more than half the websites have Smith as still directing it). I saw it on an unconfirmed list for Dec 2006 and in some listings as 2007. IMDB has Mark Day as a cast member, is this confirmed and what role would he play?
Klay

Klay,
it’s not looking good for “Green Hornet” at the moment – I guess you can say it’s been put on hold, much like the telemarketer who called me last night (Oh heck, no wonder people can’t get through). The film’s writer, Kevin ‘Not so Silent’ Smith, recently told About.com where the film’s at : “Green Hornet, I’m not sure where it is now. I don’t know if it went with Harvey and Bob or if it’s staying at Disney. But there’s a script out there and I guess whoever has it looks for a director next.” More chance of seeing the long-gestating “Fletch Won” first I think. As for Mark Day – the dude’s probably added his own name to the cast credits. I’m about to list myself as ‘Jennifer Garner’s butt double’ in “Catch and Release” – cos, well, I can.

I am writing you in hopes of getting contact information for Jeff Most Producer of the Crow Films and also contact Information for Lions Gate Films.
James E.Guy

James,
Can’t give out personal info unfortunately – just in case you’re really Natasha Lyonne trying to hunt down Edward ‘You burned me baby!’ Furlong. As for Lions Gate – you’ll find their contact info on their official site. Spank me for not being more help.

Mindhunters is suddenly getting a big push from Columbia Tri-Star / Sony internationally, starting with Mexico and France… and then following with Italy and Argentina. This is an "about face" of sorts for Columbia Tri-Star / Sony who previously noted Mindhunters was going direct to video/DVD. The only remaining holdouts without a theatrical release date set is Columbia Tri-Star / Sony Australia and UK. Columbia Tri-Star initially purchased international theatrical distribution rights to Mindhunters in 2001.
Very respectfully,
Thebatsignal

Thebatsignal,
You shining tonight? Hoping I can knock off the guy in the cape so I can get to his latest squeeze?
As for “Mindhunters”, as far as I know it’s still getting a direct-to-DVD release in Australia, but great news that a few territories think its fit for a theatrical. It’s a good movie. Might have even had more success if they put a blob over white-out over the line on the poster that says “Directed by Renny Harlin”.

Hello my name is nikita. This might be a bit random but I have an idea for a film, I don’t know if it has already been done or if it’s not good enough.
Please type back
Nikita

Nikita,
It’s already been done – actually, remade, spun-off and now a three-volume comic. My best to Elton John.

Dear Sir,
I have recently produced a sci-fi horror movie entitled Exterminator City which is due to be released on dvd in the States on the 19th July 2005 by York Entertainment. I would extremely grateful if you could give it a mention on your site.
The film is based around the expliots of a serial killing robot and features cameos from a host of B-Movie Scream Queens, Adult Stars and Glamour Models. The cast includes Julie Strain, Brinke Stevens, Teresa May, Cathy Barry, Zenova Braedon, Fembomb, Rhiannon, Lilith Stabbs, Jill Kelly, Syn Devil, Amy Lynn Best, Katarina Nikita, Lana Cox, Penny Lynn, Taylor Wayne, Persephone and Jacklyn Lick to name but a few.
The synopsis is as follows – The year is 2027. A robot pest controller turned serial killer has embarked on a murderous rampage carving his way through the occupants of Atro City. Following in the wake of his destruction are a Tough robot homicide detective and a sinister robot psychiatrist. Their investigation will take them on a journey into a twisted technological nightmare more terrifying than you can ever imagine. It would be great if you give it a mention.
Yours sincerely
Clive Cohen

Clive,
Don’t forget I like the ‘Don’ brand.

This probably matters very little in the long run, but in your section on “The Crow”, producer Jeff Most is incorrect about the “Halloween” three sequels preceding H20. He says that they went direct to video; this is incorrect (I know mainly because I saw that dreadful Halloween part 6 in the theatre). Now he may be mistakingly referring to the idea that had Kevin Williamson of “Scream” fame not come aboard H20, the resulting sequel would have been dumped directly into video stores. As I said before, it probably matters very little, but I wanted throw a voice into the mix.
Thanks,
Matt Anderson

Matt,
You paid cinema-admission prices for “Halloween : The Curse of Michael Myers”? So you’re the one!

Clint,
whatever happened to that movie on Janis Joplin that Renee Zellweger was going to make?
Chris

Chris,
Zellweger told me recently that it’s on-hold because of script issues. “That story deserves to be told properly”, she says, adding “because what an extraordinary person she was, what an influence she had.”

Clint,
If it wasn’t for Sean Penn’s cameo in “War of the Worlds” – it would have sucked. He made the movie.
Aly

Aly,
I know I ducked out of the movie for a few minutes there to attend to business, but I didn’t think I’d miss something as important as a cameo from Sean Penn? You sure you were in the right theatre? Not thinking of Tim Robbins, the guy who Penn popped off in “Mystic River”? Easy mistake – they’ve both got two eyes, a nose and a mouth.

Hi,
Any idea if “The Crow : Wicked Prayer” is going to be released in Australia?
B-dawg

B-dwag,
It sure is. Got a promotional release yesterday from 21st Century Pictures who’ve got it advertised for a release in October (I think, don’t quote me). If not for the whole Disney split, I’m almost positive it would’ve been released via Buena Vista here.

Clint,
I can’t wait to see Drew Barrymore’s next two movies : “The Perfect Catch” and “Fever Pitch”. I love that girl. Haven’t heard much about the latter though, why?
Sally

Sally,
Why? Because “Fever Pitch” IS “The Perfect Catch”. Fox has re-titled the film for Australia. (After all, we down-under dinkum dudes and dudettes are more willing to go to something that sounds about as bland as “The Perfect Catch”, right?)

Hello, I just watched the “Resident Evil” movies and they were so awesome. (I know I’m late but there free at blockbuster with new movie rentals 🙂 anyways, “Resident Evil 2” set up what looked like there were going to make another sequel, any news if there will be one? Thanks!
Michael

Michael,
Heck, “Resident Evil” should’ve been free to everyone. But that’s another yarn. Good news for you today sonny : “Resident Evil 3” and “Resident Evil 4” have been greenlit.
The next one will be entitled “Resident Evil: Afterlife”, and be written by Paul W.S Anderson. The second, still untitled, will see Alice (Milla Jovovich) taking on Zombies in Tokyo. At the moment, the studio is considering filming the first of the two new instalments in Australia.

Why can’t people see they need to make Kurt Russell as Nick Fury. I can’t understand why people just don’t see it. He’s perfect look at him as Snake Pliskin. Come On! He looks just like him with the eye patch! So what do we have to do to get him cast as Nick Fury?
Zwallyzool

Yo Dude,
What do you have to do? Get some green, buy a studio, snag the rights and cast Kurt. Easy.
