Pinnochio : 70th Anniversary Edition [DVD]

By Ashley Hillard

I can’t be the first one slightly creeped out by the premise of Pinocchio – older man brings a young boy puppet to life and traps him in his toy shop. It reads a little like a story from Michael Jackson’s Neverland to me. This Disney Classic was never among my favorites, but it does have some spectacular scenes that I’m sure look even more amazing in Blu Ray / High Definition.

Extras

The DVD set includes a DVD of the movie, which includes bonuses such as a remix / new version (blech) of Wish Upon A Star, audio commentary, games and activities. Two other discs are too high tech for my DVD player but include Blu Ray DVDs of the movie and bonus features.

For those with questionable childhoods that missed this film, it follows the story of Pinocchio, a wooden puppet / turned real boy who is followed by Jiminy Cricket, who acts as his unsuccessful conscience. Every time Pinocchio lies, his nose grows (insert penis joke here). Through his series of misadventures, Pinocchio must prove he is worthy of being turned into a real boy.

The whale scene would be spectacular…I think…in high definition. There is a true art to hand drawn cartoons that current audiences will probably appreciate more through the new technologies they can be viewed on. It’s hard to rate a classic Disney film; it is so subjective as some films mean more to people than others. I feel that this is not the strongest Disney film storywise, but the DVD makes a great effort at keeping the story relevant through bonus features and releasing it in an updated format.
