Ralph Macchio talks Karate Kid redo

Ralph Macchio was stopped at Sundance by the MTV crew who asked him what he felt about Will Smith’s new “Karate Kid” remake.

Needless to say, he was holding a lot back, but the original Daniel-san did admit he feels it’s one of those films – like “E.T” – that should probably be left alone.

“It feels pretty good that some people are pretty angry that they’re trying to remake The Karate Kid.. it feels good that the public feels you don’t touch certain things. Some times you go back to that well, and probably shouldn’t.”

“From my personal view, the filling the void of what Mr. Miyagi was – and the magic of that character – is going to be the toughest task,” he said of a character s. “I (also) don’t know where the romantic story-arc goes (with Smith’s Daniel) at that age.”

I don’t know about you guys, but I’d personally like to see a new “Karate Kid” movie with Macchio – not necessarily with him playing the angst-ridden teen again (he’s what, 50 now!?) but maybe as the new ‘Karate Kid”s father… or even as someone that fills the void left by Miyagi? That”ll never happen, not when Big-time-Box-Office-Superstar Will Smith wants to do his own version, but it’d be nice to think Sony had some kind of respect, or loyalty, towards the trillions of people that grew up on the beloved “Karate Kid” trilogy.

Funnily enough, Will Smith has actually come out this week and announced that they might NOT be calling his (well, it’s his son Jaden that’ll be starring; Will’s only producing) film “The Karate Kid” and that they’re looking for a new title. Smartest words to come out of the man’s mouth since “Now back up, put the gun down, and get me a pack of Tropical Fruit Bubblicious”.

Babylon 5 the movie?
