Hey hey we’re the Munsters!! Oh wait, wrong song… carry on. Word is that Seth Myers is rebooting the 1960s monster sitcom “The Munsters”. The show ran from 1964-1967, in the days of black and white TV, set at 1313 Mockingbird Lane in the fictional Mockingbird Heights, California. Deadline is reporting that the show will be rebooted for a modern day telling (yes that means COLOUR), following “members of an offbeat family who are determined to stay true to themselves but struggle to fit in in hipster Brooklyn.”
The show is currently in development, with Myers and Jill Kargman working on it for NBC. Kargman will write the script as well as executive produce with Myers and Mike Shoemaker.
This isn’t the first time the network has taken a stab at rebooting the monster-themed sitcom, with a pilot airing in 2012 with Jerry O’Connell as Herman Monster and Portia de Rossi as wife Lily. It also starred Eddie Izzard as Grandpa and Charity Wakefield as cousin Marilyn. Ultimately the pilot was passed up, but NBC didn’t completely close the door on a potential reboot in the future.
Of course that time seems to be now, with the new show to revert back to the half-hour format that “The Munsters” originally took on. Hopefully this will be a successful way to wake up the show from the TV graveyard.
