Sad news today, with word from the British media that veteran Academy Award winning actor, Sir John Mills, has passed away at the age of 97.
Sir John made over 100 feature films in his career, in roles as memorable as the films he starred in, such as "Goodbye, Mr. Chips", playing the young Pip in 1946’s "Great Expectations", Father Robinson in "Swiss Family Robinson", Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig & Lord Chelmsford in Sir Richard Attenborough’s "Oh, What A Lovely War" & "Gandhi" respectively, among his many other roles.
For many people, Sir John was best known as Professor Bernard Quartermass from the late 70’s TV series "Quartermass", or, perhaps most famously, in his Oscar winning turn as Michael, in 1970’s "Ryan’s Daughter", from Director David Lean.
Sir Richard Attenborough, speaking from London to BBC Radio, said "(he was) almost unequalled as a world British movie star" and he was "adored" by everyone who had known him. "There was no-one comparable really. He gave such a variety of impeccable performances…. I shall miss him very much but I shall not be alone. He will be hugely missed."
Sir John is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary Hayley Bell, and by his daughters Hayley ("The Parent Trap"), and Juliette.
