Some TV news – renewals, cancellations and shows back from the dead

So last week we reported that NBC had canned “Timeless” and as quick as it was cancelled, the defibrillator has been brought out and it’s come back from the dead. According to Deadline, the fans’ reaction to the cancellation prompted NBC to reconsider the cancellation and it’s back on for a 10-episode second season.

Fox favourite “New Girl” has been renewed for a seventh and final season of 8 episodes accroding to the show’s star Jake Johnson. Season 6 wrapped up nicely, so it was unclear if there would be another season, but fans are sure to be pleased with the decision to see the fate of Jess & Nick’s rekindled relationship, and Cece & Schmidt’s new arrival.

Code Black” will be back for a 3rd season on CBS, with it given a last minute renewal. The ratings for the show have overall been fairly solid, and the addition of Rob Lowe is sure to have contributed to its continuance.

CBS’ “2 Broke Girls” has not survived the chopping block, with its cancellation being announced after 6 seasons. Popular comedies “The Big Bang Theory” and “Mom” have been renewed, as well as Big Bang spinoff “Young Sheldon” being given the green light, so perhaps there’s not enough room on the schedule for another comedy.

Long running adventure reality staple “The Amazing Race” has been renewed on CBS, as well as crime-drama “Elementary” back for a sixth season. There was never really any doubt for the Sherlock Holmes drama, but it was left down to the wire for the announcement of the renewal. The Amazing Race, which feels like it’s been running since the 1960s will also be back on board, as apparently there’s still people left in the population that haven’t yet competed.

Speaking of long-running TV shows, “Law and Order: SVU” has also been renewed for a 19th season on NBC. The drama is currently in the midst of season 18, and is closing in on the record set by “Gunsmoke” of 20 seasons of a live-action primetime series.

Fox has also given “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” the go ahead for season 5, and “The Exorcist” another shot at season 2. Brooklyn has always had a fairly modest audience, but having Andy Samberg as the key face has always done the show favours. Similarly, The Exorcist has boasted a solid audience, enough to get the fright-fest a second season which teases “a new chapter of the iconic franchise”.
